As temperatures drop each day, winter draws nearer, bringing with it an increased risk of illnesses associated with colder wear, such as pneumonia and asthma.

A hospital in Gurugram Paras Health highlights a significant rise in pneumonia cases among children as cold wear and pollution levels increase.

What Causes Pneumonia?

“With seasonal changes and rising pollution, we’re seeing a concerning spike in pneumonia cases, especially in children,” said Dr Rakesh Tiwari, Senior Consultant in Pediatrics at Paras Health, Gurugram.

“Children with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma are particularly vulnerable, and even mild symptoms now require more intensive treatment. It’s crucial for families to take proactive steps to safeguard ir health during this season.”

Precautions To Reduce Pneumonia Risks

Dr Tiwari shares several tips to help mitigate pneumonia risks as winter approaches:

  • Stay indoors during peak pollution hours, especially in morning and evening, and use air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.
  • Wear masks when going outside, and keep homes well-ventilated for a healthy indoor environment.
  • Stay hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and stay up-to-date on vaccinations, including flu and pneumonia vaccines.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities on high-pollution days, and don’t ignore mild respiratory symptoms early intervention can help prevent severe complications.
