Despite the heckling by right-wing protestors, a teary-eyed camerawoman persistently films the Sabarimala protests; social media hails in support

Despite the heckling, harassing and abusing, a teary-eyed Shajila Abdulrahman kept her camera rolling. The camerawoman was assigned to cover the Sangh parivar protest on-going in Kerala.

The camerawoman was assigned to get reactions from BJP leaders about Bindu Ammini and Kanakadurga’s historic feat of offering prayers at the Sabarimala shrine.

The camera-person for Kairali Television, a channel owned by the Communist Party of India, was covering the protests in Thiruvananthapuram against the entry of two women of menstruating age inside the temple

Protested attacked media personnel covering the event and even damaged their equipment. 

Shajila became a social media sensation after Kerala’s Mathrubhumi newspaper published a photo of her continuing to shoot the protest.

Several journalists staged a march in Thiruvananthapuram on January 3 to protest against the assault they were subjected to since Wednesday.

An umbrella organisation of various pro-Hindutva groups has called for a state-wide shutdown on Thursday, amid protests at several places after entry of two women into the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala.

As the news of the women entering the temple spread, protests erupted with right-wing activists blocking highways and forcing closure of shops and markets on Wednesday. Media personnel, reporting from outside the state secretariat, were allegedly attacked by BJP and Yuva Morcha activists during the protests.

Announcing the dawn-to-dusk shutdown on behalf of the Sabarimala Karma Samiti Samiti, its leader K P Sasikala said the government has betrayed devotees.
