JDU rift over CAB explodes: Prashant Kishor reminds CM Nitish Kumar of 'victory of 2015'

Taking another swipe at the party leadership over its support to CAB, JDU leader Prashant Kishor hinted at the betrayal of the 2015 assembly election mandate.

Janata Dal (United) vice president Prashant Kishor on Wednesday took ar swipe at party leership for its support for Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). He issued a reminder about voters who reposed ir faith in party in 2015 Bihar assembly elections, hinting that JDU's current actions were a betrayal of this mandate. At that time, JDU formed government with its pre-poll ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) having won a landslide mandate with 178 seats. However, two parties fell out in 2017, with JDU going back to its erstwhile alliance partner BJP. Moreover, Kishor taunted that JDU wouldn’t have so much lever without its 2015 electoral performance.

Rift in JDU

Kishor was considered a key architect of 2015 victory of Mahagatbandhan in Bihar. He and some leers such as Pavan Varma have openly expressed ir disapproval of CAB and asked party chief Nitish Kumar to reconsider his position on Bill. JDU vice president highlighted that Bill ran afoul of party's constitution which prominently featured word 'secular'.

Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019

CAB was passed by Lok Sabha on Monday after a day-long debate. It seeks to provide citizenship to  mirity communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Banglesh and Pakistan. This will be applicable to members of se communities having arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Moreover, y will t be considered as illegal migrants. ditionally, mandatory residence period for naturalised citizenship for se communities would be reduced to 5 years. Home Minister Amit Shah tabled CAB in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
