LPG cylinders' price drop to benefit around 33 crores consumers, says Anurag Thakur

Ahead of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Onam’ festivals, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet's decision to slash the price of the LPG cylinders by Rs 200 came as a big relief to every household. The decision will reportedly benefit around 33 crores consumers across the country. Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated that with this decision, PM Modi in a way has gifted crores of sisters of this country on Raksha Bandhan and Onam. The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the subsidy on LPG cylinders providing a moment for the lower and middle class people to smile. 

The central government has approved a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder to the LPG consumers including the beneficiaries under the Ujjawala Scheme. Union Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed the news, saying that with this decision, around 33 crore consumers of the LPG cylinders will be benefitted across the country. Earlier, the government had slashed the rates of commercial cylinders last month.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur, while addressing a press conference in Delhi stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to slash the rates of the LPG cylinders by Rs 200. With this, he has ensured to give some happiness to the crores of sisters of this country as a Raksha Bandhan gift. However, this decision will put an extra burden on the central government, but the government is all set to bear it. 

He even stated that the latest decision will also be applied on the LPG consumers under Ujjawala Scheme. As per information, the Ujjawala Scheme consumers were already getting Rs 200 subsidy per cylinders earlier and after the additional price cut of Rs 200, the subsidy will go up at Rs 400. 

Reports suggest that the prices of non-commercial LPG cylinders stands over Rs 1100, varying from state to state. Now, with the current decision coming into effect the prices will come down to around Rs 900. If sources are to be believed, the government was reviewing the subsidy given on cooking gas for the last couple of weeks. This decision of the government is believed to put an additional burden of about Rs 7500 crore on the government.

There has been no major reduction in the prices of LPG gas cylinders in the last six months. On the first date of August, the price of domestic cooking gas in Delhi was Rs.1103.  At the same time, the price in Mumbai is Rs 1102.50, in Kolkata Rs 1129 and in Chennai Rs 1118.50.  There has been no change in the prices of domestic gas cylinders (LPG Gas Cylinder price) since March 2023.  At the same time, the prices of commercial gas cylinders have been changed several times.
