Days after the attack on the CRPF convoy in Pulwama, security forces in a joint operation killed top Jaish-e-Mohammed commander Kamran along with another terrorist who was identified as Hilal. The joint operation was carried out by 55 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army along with Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and personnel from 182 and 183 Battalion of the CRPF. Army personnel including a major and a civilian lost their lives in the encounter

WHY IS KAMRAN IMPORTANT? 

Intelligence agency sources say that Kamran along with the other Afghanistan war veteran Abdul Rasheed Ghazi is a lethal combination.

Kamran was a Pakistani national who went by the alias Gazi.

They were sent by Masood Azhar to create mayhem in the valley. Ghazi is known to be an IED expert.

In fact, it is suspected that the explosives used in the CRPF convoy attack was assembled by this module of Jaish. 

According to sources, Kamran infiltrated in December and operated from Pulwama, Awantipora and Tral in South Kashmir.

Kamran is believed to be the brain behind several other attacks in the valley apart from the CRPF convoy attack. 

HOW DID THE ENCOUNTER TAKE PLACE?

Following the Pulwama attack, security forces were working on multiple inputs on the whereabouts of Kamran, Ghazi and Masood Azhar’s nephew.

After receiving a specific about, Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched late Sunday night.

This comes after multiple raids were carried out by the security forces in South Kashmir after the attack. Several people were also detained by Jammu and Kashmir police.

The encounter has come in less than a week after one of the deadliest terror attack orchestrated by the JeM in Pulwama's Awantipora area where 40 CRPF jawans were killed. On February 14, at least 40 CRPF personnel were killed after a vehicle laden with explosives rammed an explosive-laden car into a vehicle in the CRPF convoy in Pulwama district .

Several countries from across the globe stood in support of India in the wake of a deadly terror attack.

In the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack, India also revoked the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status that was unilaterally accorded to Pakistan over 20 years ago. The government of India also resolved to isolate Pakistan on the global stage.
