What are protests for?
CAA law grants citizenship to persecuted mirities such as Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi refugees who have escaped persecution from Banglesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and have taken refuge in India since or before December 31 2014. With mention of Muslims in CAA law, a section of Muslim community seemingly feels threatened alleging that government plans to systematically detain or oust Indian Muslims despite government's repeated assurance that Indian citizen will be ousted as law is about giving citizenship to persecuted mirities and t about snatching away citizenship.
Protestors have raised questions on exclusion of Muslim refugees in law. Center in its defense has said that Muslims are in majority in Banglesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and are t persecuted in se countries as against plight of mirities which is much worse. Also, center stated that leers during times of independence and partition such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru h promised mirities that India would accept m if y wish to come back since y were victims of partition whereas a section of Muslim community willingly chose to make a separate Muslim dominated nation which is today's Pakistan hence Muslims need t come back to India as it was ir decision to go to Pakistan. center reiterated that CAA law is a fulfillment of long-awaited promise me by Mahatma Gandhi and several such leers of those times.
