Home Minister Amit Shah chairs key meet on agrarian laws ahead of Centre-Farmers talks

Several members of the Cabinet are said to be present in the meeting being chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah which took place on Tuesday

Just a day before next round of talks between Centre and farmers' unions, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in national capital over ongoing protests. Several members of Cabinet are said to be present in meeting being chaired by Amit Shah. This is second key meet held by Home Minister in a span of two days, with previous one held on Monday right after Centre invited farmers to resume talks. next round of talks between Centre and farmers' representatives are slated to be held at 2 pm on Wednesday at Vigyan Bhawan.

After a brief pause in negotiations, Union government on Monday invited representatives of 40 protesting farmers' unions, in response to ir letter dated December 26. Maintaining that Indian government is always rey to talk to farmers with an open mind, Agriculture Ministry Secretary Sanjay Agarwal reiterated its commitment to dress issues with honest intent.

Moreover, he stressed that a detailed discussion will be held on farmers' concerns pertaining to three farm laws, procurement at Minimum Support Price, Commission for Air Quality Manment in National Capital Region and joining Areas Ordinance, 2020 and Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2020. Earlier, talks h come to a standstill after Centre me it clear that it shall t repeal three farm laws passed by both Houses of Parliament.

On December 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that his government was also rey for talks with those vociferously opposing Centre over agrarian laws. At same time, he maintained that discussion should be based on facts. Observing that his government is taking all possible steps to ensure welfare of farmers, he appealed to m to t fall prey to lies spre by some political parties. ditionally, PM lambasted Opposition for using farmers' platform to put forth unrelated demands such as release of accused in cases involving violence.
