Karna CM appeals to people to stay off 'vested interests' on Friday as Mangaluru citizens indulge in rumor-mongering and stage chaotic protests across the city

With anti-CAA protests having claimed two lives in Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday appealed to people to stay away from 'vested interests' indulging in rumour-mongering and assured his government's commitment to protecting rights of all citizens.

"In view of protests in certain parts of state against enactment of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). I make this humble appeal to every citizen of Karnataka to stay away from vested interests indulging in rumor-mongering and stoking passions to disturb peace and harmony in state," Yediyurappa said.

Clarifying that CAA will t affect rights and privileges of any Indian citizen of any religion in any way, he said, refore let us t heed to ill-motivated rumors and tarnish peace-loving im of state of Karnataka.

"Let us all join toger in upholding this im by maintaining peace and harmony," he ded.

Chief Minister also assured that government was committed to protecting rights of every citizen without prejudice to caste, creed, community, religion or race.

Anti-CAA protests in Mangaluru

Two persons were killed in police firing on Thursday as protests against CAA turned violent in Mangaluru. Police h lobbed tear gas shells, resorted to baton charge and fired in air to disperse protesters in Mangaluru, as thousands of demonstrators h taken to streets in many cities and towns across Karnataka defying prohibitory orders. Despite prohibitory orders, demonstrations h turned violent in Mangaluru following which police clamped curfew in parts of city until Friday night and later extended it to entire Mangaluru commissionerate limits till December 22 midnight.

Schools closed, internet prohibited

state government h on Thursday night also issued a tification prohibiting mobile internet data services of all service providers for next 48 hours in jurisdiction of Mangaluru City and Dakshina Kanna District. Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Mangaluru on Friday and Visvesvaraya Techlogical University has postponed its exams. Police said strict vigil has been maintained across coastal city to maintain law and order. With a curfew in place, movement of people has been scarce. Police detained some Kerala-based media persons early on Friday in front of Government Wenlock hospital, where post-mortem of deceased was underway. ir cameras were seized, sources said. detained journalists belonged to Asianet, 24 channel, MediaOne and Mathrubhumi. In state capital that witnessed large scale protests, police have me massive security arrangements as protesters are expected to st demonstrations at some places on Friday also, despite prohibitory orders in place.
