Pralhad Joshi: Request opposition to cooperate in Winter session

Union Parliamentary Affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday sought the cooperation of the opposition parties for the upcoming Winter session of the Parliament. He mentioned that the government had tabled 4 bills that were pending approval. Furthermore, he revealed that the Centre was contemplating the introduction of 7 to 8 bills in the Winter session.

Winter session schedule

As per reports, the winter session will last from November 18 to December 13. The schedule for the session came up for discussion at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA). While it was headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, other senior ministers such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also participated in the meeting. While the Ministry has communicated with the Secretariats of both Houses of Parliament in this regard, the exact dates and sittings of the session are expected to be announced soon.

Expected legislation

Two ordinances promulgated by the President pertaining to amendments in the Income Tax Act, 1961 and Finance Act, 2019 and the banning of sale, manufacture and storage of e-cigarettes, will be most likely be tabled in the Parliament for approval. Furthermore, the Centre is expected to focus on the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill as it found specific mention in the BJP’s manifesto for the 2019 General elections. There is also speculation about legislation on the Uniform Civil Code.
