'West Bengal Assembly passed resolution to rename state to 'Bangla' writes TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray to Rajya Sabha, asks Centre to allow the renaming

In a surprise revelation, TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, on Thursday, has written to Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma, stating that the West Bengal Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution in July 2018, that the state should be formally renamed from 'West Bengal' to 'Bangla'.

In a surprise revelation, TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, on Thursday, has written to Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma, stating that the West Bengal Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution in July 2018, that the state should be formally renamed from 'West Bengal' to 'Bangla'. He further claims that this resolution has since been pending for Central government's consideration.

In his letter, he has claimed that the Central government should put into effect the passage of the resolution by the state assembly to 'restore the actual identity of the Bengali people'.

In a similar fashion, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had previously renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj and on Diwali eve last year, he had announced that Faizabad district would henceforth be known as Ayodhya.

"Ayodhya is a symbol of our 'aan, baan aur shaan' (honour, pride and prestige)," Adityanath said in Ayodhya. 

He had further claimed in then-poll-bound Telangana in December 2018, that BJP is ready to rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar if voted to power in the state.

"If you are keen to rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar, then vote for BJP in the elections," Adityanath said, as per PTI.

Following this development, on December 30, 2018, PM Modi renamed the three islands in the Andaman and Nicobar islands previously known as Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island. Their new names are Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, respectively. 

The renaming took place on the 75th anniversary of freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose hoisting the national flag at Port Blair.
