Course of case in Supreme Court
After several pleas and hearings in case since 1950, Supreme Court on January 25, 2019, h constituted a 5- member bench heed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi who is set to retire from his duties after prouncing verdict tomorrow, on vember 16. five-member bench set on January 25 comprised of justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S A Nazeer. 4 days later on January 29, government moved to apex court seeking its permission to return 67-acre acquired land around disputed Ayodhya site to original owners which was later opposed by Nirmohi Akhara on April 9. In a major development, later on, February 26, SC favoured mediation between two sides and on March 8 it referred a panel heed by former SC judge F M I Kallifulla for mediation between sides.

3-member mediation committee submitted its interim report to SC on May 9 and on very next day, Supreme Court extended time till August 15 to complete mediation process. July 11, SC sought report on 'progress of mediation' and on July 18, SC allowed mediation process to continue hoping of some major development through mediation and sought outcome report by August 1. On August 1, 3 member mediation committee submitted report of mediation to SC in a sealed cover. next day SC h decided to conduct day-to-day hearing on Ayodhya land dispute which led to final 40-day marathon hearings in Supreme Court. On October 4, SC anunced that it would wrap up hearing on October 17 and anunced judgement by vember 17. Finally, on October 16, Supreme Court concluded its hearing and reserved its order.
