Tamil Nadu: Work on new Pamban rail bridge commences in Rameswaram

The work on a new Pamban rail bridge over the sea connecting this holy island to the mainland in Tamil Nadu got off to a start on Friday, officials said.

Work on a new Pamban rail bridge over sea connecting this holy island to mainland in Tamil Nadu got off to a start on Friday, vember 8, officials said. A 'Bhoomi Pooja' (groundbreaking ceremony) was performed to mark inauguration of construction work on bridge to be built by Railway Vikas Nigam Limited, a public sector unit. new bridge would help railways operate trains at higher speed, carry more weight and increase volume of traffic between Pamban and Rameswaram.

foundation stone for 2.05 km-long bridge was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kanyakumari in March this year when he dedicated several highway and railway projects. new bridge would help railways operate trains at higher speed, carry more weight and increase volume of traffic between mainland Pamban and Rameswaram, thronged by devotees from across country, officials said adding work would be completed in two years.

Sourn Railways operates trains from Rameswaram to various parts of country. Arrangements have been made to carry on construction work even during rainy season, an official said. All equipment required for work has been brought to nearby Pamban. new bridge would have 101 piers with a vertical lift facility to open and close middle portion to allow pass of ships and steamers.

Scherzer span in existing bridge is operated manually to allow ships while proposed facility would have electro-mechanical controlled systems which will be interlocked with train control systems, officials have said earlier.
