UP: Marathon Assembly session goes on 36 hours; CM praises democracy

A marathon 36-hour-long special session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature, which commenced at 11 am on October 2 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi concluded on Thursday night. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who spoke at length, mentioned that 149 council members addressed the special gathering. During the session, both the houses passed a resolution asking the state government to take effective steps to achieve the sustainable development goals set up by the United Nations while adhering to the ideals of the Father of the Nation.

Opposition boycotts the session

The special session was boycotted by the opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, BSP, Congress, and the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party, who claimed that the State government is just out to set a record. The majority of the members who attended the session were from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janta Dal. From the Indian National Congress Party, only one member had attended the session.

Congress MLA from Raebareli, Aditi Singh attended the session, and when she was asked about the defying her party's stance, she said, "If you heard my speech, I only spoke about development and sustainable development goals. I practice politics the way my father used to do it - whatever I feel is correct, I do it." Singh said she came to the House and participated in discussions as she felt that it was an appropriate thing to do. When asked if she had deviated from the party line, she said, "I rose above party line and tried to speak on the development. This is my first and foremost priority."

The UP Chief Minister praised the concept of the parliamentary session and said that in a democracy, the dialogue is a symbol of coordination and peace. "That is why democracy was accepted as the best method of governance within the world. To realize the power of democracy, we all participate in this type of discussion and become part of it." Adityanath also said that he hoped that this discussion would be helpful as a document for future generations.

Big promises 

The CM continued the conversation around development and stated that in order to achieve the physical and financial targets that have been set for the year 2022, 2024, and 2030, the CM highlighted that concrete action plans have to be made to achieve those goals. He said, "We have to work on the goals set to eradicate poverty, hunger, unemployment from the world. 'Vision 2030' has been created to achieve these goals." Adityanath also said that UP will contribute one thousand billion dollars towards the Prime Minister's target of making India a $5 trillion economy of 2024.
