UP's Chitrakoot district faces flood threat as Mandakini River swells

With river Mandakini flowing in full spate, severe waterlogging has been caused in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot. This is due to the incessant rains that have thrown normal life out of gear in the area. Many parts of UP and Bihar have been experiencing heavy rainfall in the last month. The water level in many rivers has been rising which poses the threat of inundation in the low-lying area.

Alert issued by the District Administration 

The district administration has issued an alert after taking cognizance of the situation. They have asked people and traders along the river to vacate the shops and houses. Apart from this, rescue teams have also been deployed by the administration. With floodwaters entering residential areas, locals have been moving to other places with their luggage.

The agony of locals affected by the rains 

The locals that live near the banks of the river have said that their houses and nearly 1,000 shops have been submerged in Chitrakoot. They have also claimed that no aids are being provided to them by the district administration. Locals also said that they are compelled to arrange the food and other relief materials on their own because of the ongoing situation. The locals have said that the flood level is increasing day-by-day. 

A local said, “Flood level is increasing. Normal life of people has been severely affected and many places in Ramghat are submerged in floodwater. We are arranging everything own our own. No one has come forward to help us". Another local gravity of the situation, he said, "People are in a panic as they have lost their houses and shops. The administration has not informed whether the situation will get worse or not”. One of the villagers said that a car drowned in water, however, the officials inside it were rescued.

The extreme situation in Bihar 

In addition to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar has also been facing extreme situations. On September 28, the state had received 84.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 5.7 mm. Areas including Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Bhojpur districts received rainfall above 130 mm in 24 hours, affecting lives to a high level. Hundreds of people have died and a red alert by the IMD remains active in the State.
