Uttar Pradesh: Marathon 36-hour Legislative Assembly concludes

A marathon 36-hour assembly session in Uttar Pradesh concluded on Thursday night. The session was held in order to commemorate Gandhi's 150th anniversary.

marathon 36-hour-long special session of Uttar Pradesh Legislature, which commenced at 11 am on October 2 to mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi concluded on Thursday night. Both houses of legislature, Assembly and Council, on Thursday, passed a resolution asking state government to take effective steps to achieve sustainable development goals set up by United Nations while adhering to ideals of Far of Nation.

Members form Council join session

As proceedings of Legislative Assembly were going on, members of Legislative Council too joined m following adjournment), reby giving it look of a joint meeting of both houses. Asked to comment on nature of sitting and wher it should be termed as a joint session of both houses, Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Hriday Narayan Dixit said, "It should t be construed as joint session or joint sitting. It can be called as 'sanyukt sammelan' (joint meeting)." Dixit was joined by Ramesh Yadav, chairman of UP Legislative Council, who sat next to him as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke for nearly one-and-half hours. Later, both houses were were adjourned sine die.

In his speech, Adityanath also informed members of both houses about committees formed for achieving goals. Adityanath thanked leaders of or opposition parties who participated in special session for listening to voice of conscience and for living to values of democracy. "Such continuous events are a rarity. In democracy, communication should continue. It is best weapon, and if communication is disrupted, n it may become cause of 'upadrav' (clash)," he said.

Yogi attacks opposition

Taking a jibe at opposition, Chief Minister said, "Initially y had said to 48 hour-long-session. fact is that it difficult for opposition to sit even for a minute. slogans, which y had raised in name of poor, have been unveiled. opposition used to say that re is discussion on poverty in house, and when discussions were going on, opposition went 'nau-do-gyarah' (fled away)." mandate given by people in 2014, 2017 and 2019 shows that people have given ir mandate after seriously deliberating on various aspects," he added.

Citing a couplet by Tulsidas 'jahaan sumati tahaan sampati nana, jahaan kumati tahaan bipatti nidana' (where re is wisdom, re is prosperity, and where this is stupidity, re is problem), he said that in previous regimes money meant for providing flood relief to people of state was gobbled up, and y used to believe that doing such acts was ir birth right.

Criticises Congress Party

Hitting out at Congress in particular, Adityanath said, "Those who fled from discussion, for m democracy means ir family. Congress should have participated in session. Be it case of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. y had said that Gandhian values should be imbibed. Do you imbibe Gandhian values through CWG scam?" he said.

Adityanath said that sustainable development goals will help Uttar Pradesh to move ahead as all goals are inter-linked. " entire world is looking towards India, and India is looking towards UP," he said.

Referring to attendance of Legislative Assembly, he said that on Wednesday at around 12 midnight, 103 MLAs were present, at 1 am re were 88 MLAs, while at around 2 am, re were 78 MLAs present.
