Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan said that stopping National Population Register (NPR) update will prevent people from getting due benefits. NPR is a Register of usual residents of country. It is being prepared at local (Vill/sub-Town), sub-District, District, State, and National level.

'Will stop people from benefits'
He said, "I don't kw what ultimate intention is behind stopping work. If some state governments decide t to implement, it will ultimately result in depriving people of state in getting benefits and facilities that are due on basis of that records. People should t be me as a bargaining tool for petty political benefit of leers who are trying to misle people."

comments come after Kerala and West Bengal have ordered for all NPR related work to be stopped in state. While a government order said NPR h been put on hold in view of apprehensions that it would le to National Register of Citizens (NRC), a statement from Chief Minister's Office said action was taken as NPR "deviates from Constitutional values" and also because matter was before Supreme Court. step by CPI(M)-led government comes amid raging protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in state and in several or parts of country. order issued by Kerala Principal Secretary (General ministration) said, "Considering that apprehensions among general public that conduct of NPR related activities les to NRC in wake of Citizenship Amendment Act-2019, state government orders to stay all activities connected with updation of National Population Register in state forthwith."
