Deepak Chahar: Performance review from 3rd T20I against South Africa

After a decent debut against West Indies in August, Deepak Chahar was selected to play the recently concluded home T20I series against South Africa. The South Africans are currently in India for three T20I’s and three Test matches. The first T20I in Dharamshala was abandoned due to bad weather. In the second match, the Indian team emerged victoriously and took a 1-0 lead. However, because of Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 79, South Africa beat India by nine wickets in the third T20 International with the series ending in a 1-1 draw.

Performance

Chahar bowled the first over with Quinton de Kock at the crease. The first over was a success as the South African batsman was able to make only one run in that over. The ball was then given to Washington Sundar, with Chahar coming back to deliver the third. The over started with two singles at the start, and as the bowler provided some hope, he delivered a bad ball and gave away four runs to Hendricks. Navdeep Saini delivered the fourth over, and Chahar came back to deliver his last over of the match. The fifth over started badly with Chahar giving away a single in the first ball, and a four in the second. In the remaining four balls, Chahar gave three runs. In total, Chahar gave away 15 runs in 18 balls and didn’t take a single wicket.

Overview

India were restricted at 134 for nine by the South African bowlers at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. Batting first at the ground which is known to favour the chasing teams, Team India was cruising at 54/1 after dominating the first six powerplay overs. After the departure of Shikhar Dhawan, South Africa got an opening and they grabbed it with both hands. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, who thought of hitting a boundary, gave away their wickets within a space of two balls, leaving India in trouble at 92/5 in the 13th over. During the toss, Virat Kohli said that he doesn't want the team to slip into a comfort zone. Batting first or second, he wants his team to be a master of all situations.
