Graeme Smith, the former South African skipper and Tim May, the former Australian off-spinner have been honoured with a life membership to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in recognition of their service and achievements in cricket. Smith has an impressive record in One-Day International cricket and became the youngest ever captain at the age of only 22. He has scored 27 Test centuries and finished his career with 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25. In the One-Day International cricket, he has scored 6,989 runs including ten centuries.
Record-breaker, Smith
Smith's first tour to England in 2003 marked his two double-centuries in the first two Tests of the series. The second-century came at Lord's and broke the record for the highest individual score by an overseas player, which was Sir Don Bradman when he scored 259 runs. Smith has also secured a second place on the Honours Board back in 2008 for hitting a century at the Home of Cricket in a drawn Test. Smith thanked the MCC for the honour and recalled memories of playing at the Home of Cricket.
Tim May honoured with Life Membership
Along with Graeme Smith, Tim May, the former Australian off-spinner is also awarded the Honorary Life Membership in recognition of his outstanding achievements in cricket. May has played 24 Tests for Australia and has taken 75 wickets. He has a remarkable best of 5 for 9 against the West Indies in 1993 in a match which Australia lost by a single run. In his career, he has yielded 439 wickets in total and has played 47 One-Day Internationals for his country. He joined the MCC World Cricket committee back in 2013 and has served as a member of ICC's Cricket Committee. Apart from May and Smith, Paul Collingwood, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Johnson and Adrian Morgan are being awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC in 2019.
