In his very first over, he dismissed Devon Conway and later returned to claim three wickets in just five balls, including the vital wicket of New Zealand's top run-scorer, Tim Seifert. Gus Atkinson's sharp response to Jofra Archer comparison
Despite having only played one international game, Atkinson has already earned high praise from the England selectors. His rapid rise to prominence is attributed to his impressive pace, which drew attention during the summer. As a result, he earned a place in England's provisional squad for the World Cup, and his exceptional debut has only strengthened his chances. Due to his exceptional pace, Atkinson has also drawn comparisons to England star Jofra Archer, but he doesn't dwell on such comparisons:
“I haven't played much 50-over cricket but I've played a bit of Championship cricket this year, so should be alright. I knew that once I got going, it could happen quickly. I've always known my ability and what I can do. And I always knew once I had a chance with the games… The Hundred's a big opportunity and I knew if I could perform in that it would happen quickly and thankfully it has. Probably a year-and-a-half now (of being compared with Archer). I don't like to think about that much to be honest,” Atkinson said in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo.
