After a wicket-less opening day on the field, the South African bowlers continued to struggle on Day 2 as the Indian batsmen amassed 502-7d in their first innings. To make things worse for the visitors, the South African top-order failed to negotiate their 20 overs late in the day as they were left reeling at 39-3 at stumps. Some late strikes by Ashwin and Jadeja in the day destroyed the South African top-order as they lost Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn and nightwatchman Dane Piedt for single-digit scores.

After a toiling opening two days on the field, the South African batsmen failed to negotiate their remaining 20 overs as they fell victim to the Indian spinners. After ending Day 2 at 39-3, South Africa went into Day 3 trailing the hosts by 463 runs.

To make things worse, the Proteas lost another wicket earlier in the day to be left reeling at 63-4. However, the pendulum swung in the visitors' favour when their skipper Faf du Plessis stitched together a crucial 115-run stand with opener Dean Elgar. At 178-5, Elgar was then joined by wicket-keeper/batsman Quinton de Kock and the duo then formed a 164-run stand which also helped them cross the follow-on mark. Elgar went onto score an impressive 160 before he became Ravindra Jadeja’s second victim in the innings. Quinton de Kock himself cracked a quick-fire 111 off 163 balls before he was castled by Ashwin. For the hosts, Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged his 27th 5-wicket haul in Tests.

At stumps on Day 3, South Africa are placed at 385-8 and are trailing the hosts by another 117 runs. Starting tomorrow, the two batsmen at the crease, Senuran Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj will be looking to reduce the first innings gap between two teams as much as possible.
