Plightful Asia Cup for Shreyas Iyer, so far
While KL Rahul was out injured from the two matches of the tournament due to a niggle, Shreyas Iyer got the entry in the playing XI. In the opening game against Pakistan, Shreyas Iyer came in when the side was reeling at 20/2. He looked good for a brief period but held out after scoring just 14 runs. Though he got dismissed, the shot that brought an end to his innings made a cracking sound of the bat, hinting that he was in touch. In the following game against Nepal, he was a part of the XI, but captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill handled things up-front and as a consequence, he did not bat. Next, he was supposed to feature in the Super 4s game against Pakistan but at the time of the toss, it was revealed that he has developed a back spasm and will sit out. The plight continued in the next match which was on the next day.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul returned to the side and made the most of the opportunity by scoring a century against Pakistan in his comeback match and then followed it up with a laborious 39 against Sri Lanka, the next day. Rahul is now seen as an ideal figure for the number 4 spot, and with Ishan Kishan showcasing his mettle from the other end, pressure is on Iyer to perform, but the back issue needs to be taken care of first.
