Sri Lanka's Cricket World Cup 2023 hopes suffered a blow as star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the cricket carnival due to a hamstring tear. Hasaranga picked up the injury during the Lanka Premier League 2023 which forced him to miss the Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka yet to announce World Cup squad
Sri Lanka have been forced to rethink about their team combination as Wanindu Hasaranga's World Cup dream has shattered. Hasaranga has suffered a grade 3 hamstring tear, according to RevSportz. He was undergoing rehabilitation to be match fit for the World Cup but it is understood that he has suffered another injury. Sri Lanka are yet to announce their World Cup squad and Hasaranga's injury is considered as one of the main reasons for the delay in the announcement. The last date to confirm the squads is September 28.

Sri Lanka will face South Africa in their first match of the ODI World Cup on October 7, 2023. The game will take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Sri Lanka humbled at the Asia Cup
Sri Lanka, without Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, suffered a 10-wicket defeat against Rohit Sharma-led India in the Asia Cup 2023 final at Colombo. Mohammed Siraj finished with the figures of 6/21 as India bundled out Sri Lanka for just 50 runs in 15.2 overs.

In reply, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan chased down the target in 6.1 overs to hand India a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title. Interestingly, India had previously won the Asia Cup under captain Rohit Sharma.
Sri Lanka's score of fifty became their lowest tally against India in a men's ODI and second lowest score in the format overall, according to OptaJim. It is also the lowest score by any team in the final of any multi-team tournament in men's ODI.
