The Indian cricket team will be taking on Australia in a three-match ODI series starting from September 22 ahead of the ODI World Cup. In the absence of star players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the onus to lead the Indian batting lineup will be on KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav in the first two ODIs. Surya might play as a finisher in the first India vs Australia ODI match and will look forward to replicate his T20I performance in ODI cricket.

3 things you need to know

  • Australia are coming off a 3-2 loss against South Africa
  • Australian skipper Pat Cummins will make a comeback in the team after suffering from a wrist injury
  • KL Rahul will lead Team India in the first two ODI matches against Australia

Team India to back Suryakumar Yadav in ODIs despite poor form

Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid while speaking in the press conference ahead of the first IND vs AUS ODI match revealed that the team will continue to back Suryakumar Yadav despite his poor run in ODIs. Surya is part of the Indian cricket team's provisional ODI World Cup 2023 squad. Rahul Dravid said in the press conference:

We will back him because he has got a certain quality and ability that we have seen. Yes I know we have seen it at the moment in T20 cricket but we know the kind of impact a player like him can make batting at number 6. He can change the course of the game, we have completely backed him and we are very clear about that. There has been a total clarity that we are completely behind him and we hopefully know that he will be able to turn it around in the two to three games. He is someone who will get these three games, and to be able to develop and keep growing on his journey as a ODI cricketer.

Suryakumar Yadav's recent performance in ODIs

Suryakumar Yadav had a dismal run against Australia in the IND vs AUS ODI series played earlier this year and got out for three ducks in the three matches constantly. Surya also failed to score big in Asia Cup 2023 and will look forward to score big against Australia in the first ODI.
