Lionel Messi in action for Inter Miami against Orlando City

Lionel Messi was outstanding for Inter Miami following a 90-minute rain delay. He quickly scored in the seventh minute of the Leagues Cup match at DRV PNK Stadium, taking a chest pass and shooting with his left foot to give the side a 1-0 lead over Orlando City. After Cesar Araujo's goal in the following ten minutes, the heated match ended in a draw (1-1) in the first half.

Messi's ex-Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba made his debut against Orlando City. This is the first time since 2021 that Messi, Busquets and Alaba took the field together, just like they used to do with the Catalan club. Inter Miami has re-united old friends as they near the end of their careers.

What happened in the second half of the match?

Josef Martinez's converted penalty kick gave Inter Miami a 2-1 lead over Orlando City early in the second half. Martinez received the penalty after Orlando City's Antonio Carlos fouled him on his way to the goal. Carlos was given a yellow card for the foul, which was upheld after a VAR review. Inter Miami capitalised on a scoring opportunity to take the lead.

Orlando City started to play a little aggressively, but Messi scored again in the 72nd minute to make it 3-1 for Inter Miami. This time, Robert Taylor passed Josef Martinez, who gave a lovely assist to Messi for a goal with his right foot. Since joining Inter Miami, Messi and Martinez have demonstrated exceptional collaboration, as they celebrated Messi's fifth goal for the MLS club. Messi had successfully scored two volleys with his left and right feet in style.
