IOC names Mary Kom in boxing's athlete ambassadors group for Olympics

Mary Kom has been included in a 10-strong athlete ambassadors group to represent boxers in the build-up to next year's Tokyo Olympic Games by IOC's Task Force

Six-time world champion M C Mary Kom has been included in a 10-strong athlete ambassors group to represent boxers in build-up to next year's Tokyo Olympic Games by IOC's Task Force for sport, ding to iconic pugilist's innumerable achievements. Mary Kom will represent Asian bloc in group, which also comprises likes of Ukrainian legend Vasyl Lamachenko (Europe), a two-time Olympic and world gold-medallist who w plies his tre in professional circuit, and five-time world champion and 2016 Olympic gold-winner Julio Cesar La Cruz (Americas) among ors.

Mary Kom's illustrious career

36-year-old Indian recently surpassed herself as most successful boxer in history of world championships when she claimed her eighth medal, a bronze, at marquee event's latest edition in Russia. She is also an Olympic bronze medallist in 51kg category besides being a five-time Asian champion and a Commonwealth and Asian Games gold-medallist."One female and one male ambassor per region will take on role of engaging with boxing community both in-person and digitally," IOC said in a statement."y will also help Boxing Task Force (BTF) take into account athletes' voice in all areas of its planning for qualification events and boxing tournament at Olympic Games Tokyo 2020," it ded.Boxing has been in ministrative turmoil after International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped International Boxing Association (AIBA) of rights to conduct Olympic competition earlier this year, taking complete control of even qualifying process.

IOC asserted that AIBA failed to put its house in order as far as ministrative integrity and manment of finances was concerned. "In all of work of Boxing Task Force we want to put boxers first. We are delighted with this group of diverse and inspirational athletes who make up Athlete Ambassors...," said Morinari Watanabe, IOC Member and Chair of Boxing Task Force."...look forward to working closely with m in all areas of our decisions and event planning to make sure athletes are t only at center of our work but also actively engd in it," he ded.  creation of an Athlete Ambassors Group was anunced in August this year, and y h to be first minated by respective National Olympic Committee (C), C Athletes' Commission and National Federation (NF). Or requirements included having competed at international competitions in past four years, being born later than December 31, 2001; being an amateur or professional boxer; and t having incurred any measure or sanction in relation to any violation of Olympic Charter, IOC Code of Ethics, and World Anti-Doping Code.
