Kiren Rijiju assures Nikhat Zareen that BFI will take a fair decision

Kiren Rijiju responded to the tweet by Boxer Nikhat Zareen's tweet where she had demanded a match with Mary Kom before the selection for Olympic Qualifiers

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to former Junior World Champion boxer Nikhat Zareen on Twitter, on October 18. former junior world champion had written to Sports Minister asking for a trial bout for selection of India's boxing representatives in upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Qualifiers. Zareen had demanded a match against MC Mary Kom before upcoming Olympic qualifiers. 

Responding to Nikhat Zareen's tweets, Kiren Rijiju informed her that Ministry of Sports cant interfere in selection matter of any national federation as federation has to take an automous decision as per Olympic Charter.

BFI's selection

Mary Kom was selected by Boxing Federation of India based on her consistent performance after legendary Indian boxer won her eighth World Boxing Championship medal in Russia. As BFI had already selected Mary Kom for Olympic qualifiers, Nikhat Zareen was refused a trial by BFI.

BFI had previously decided that only those who have won a gold or silver medal will be directly sent for qualifiers. federation is w planning to send Mary Kom directly to qualifiers after she won a Bronze medal at World Championship in Russia.

Olympic qualifiers are scheduled to happen in China in February 2020. Meanwhile, MC Mary Kom has stated that she would follow BFI guidelines on selection trials and will compete if asked by federation.

India's performance at World Boxing Championship was phemenal as Manju Rani reached finals in 48kg category and lost bout whereas Mary Kom eighth World Championship medal, as she won bronze in 51kg category in this prestigious tournament to add to her glittering resume that already has a staggering six gold medals and one silver.

2020 Tokyo Olympics
