'Absolute Mediocrity and Looked Shabby': India's Paris Olympics Uniform Slammed by Olympian

The much-anticipated debut of India's contingent at the 2024 Paris Olympics was met with unexpected controversy, centered around their official uniforms. Celebrated fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani's creation, intended to showcase India's rich cultural heritage, have instead sparked a wave of criticism. The uniforms, adorned in the colors of the national flag, drew sharp disapproval on social media, with many labeling them as "cheap" and "tacky."

India's Paris Olympics uniform criticised

Among the vocal critics was Jwala Gutta, an Indian badminton star and Arjuna awardee, who did not hold back in expressing her disappointment. Gutta highlighted significant flaws in the design and execution of the uniforms, particularly the saree draping for the female athletes. 

"First, not all girls know how to wear a saree...why didn’t the designer use this common sense and make a pre-draped saree (which is in current trend)?" she remarked, pointing out that many athletes appeared uncomfortable, with ill-fitting blouses compounding the issue.

Jwala Gutta further criticized the color scheme and print, arguing that they failed to represent the beauty and richness of Indian culture. She lamented the missed opportunity to incorporate traditional Indian craftsmanship, such as embroidery or hand painting, into the design. 

"It was a work of absolute mediocrity and looked shabby," she stated, underscoring her hope that future uniform designs would not compromise on quality.

As the Paris Olympics continue, the focus now shifts back to the athletes and their performances. However, the discussion around the uniforms has sparked a broader debate with many feeling the designer has looted the Indian team of their pride.

On Sunday, Manu Bhaker created history as she won India's first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. She won the bronze medal in the Women's 10m Air Pistol event, becoming the first Indian female shooter to win a medal at the Olympics.
