India's junior team pistol coach Jaspal Rana feels national shooting federation will be better off t tinkering with existing policies and programmes that brought country a record 15 Olympic quotas. likes of Manu Bhakar, Chinki Yav and Saurabh Chaudhary, who have all secured quotas for 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have prospered under tutel of former pistol ace. Seeking to protect m from exploitation and distractions in run-up to next summer's Games, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh said recently that shooters will t be allowed to sign any new commercial deals without federation's permission and parents will also have to sign a bond that exploitation will be done for "financial gains".

"I think this could have been done long time back. Right w even if re are shooters who are alrey contracted, who will give m money. How do you expect m to come out of contracts before time of ir expiry?," asked Rana, while speaking to PTI.

Raninder also said shooters, prior to Olympics, will have to train in India only as he believed few may have lost ir focus while training abro in past. But Rana, a world championship gold medallist and multiple-time Asian Games champion, while supporting NRAI's intention to protect shooters, felt move may have come a little late in day.

"While I understand federation is trying to protect shooters but, end of day, it may affect shooters' preparations before Olympics.

"I agree NRAI can monitor shooters' progress, keep a track of ir programmes but, at same time, y ( shooters) also have right to earn money," pistol ace said of his proteges as well as or shooters.

Indian shooting squ includes quite a few young players, including teen sensations such as Manu and Saurabh, with Divyansh Singh Panwar being youngest quota winner. For those who alrey have contracts, Raninder said he will ensure shooters unsign m, or he will go to courts and get a stay.  "t eugh time is left for Olympics. I don't think y should change policies, programmes and everything else that has brought us success in recent times. It's better to stick to m," Rana said.

highly-successful national coach also didn't seem to be in agreement with NRAI's plans to have shooters train in India only. "Tell me how did shooters achieve so much success (in years since Rio Olympics debacle). Didn't going abro to train help... y certainly helped. What is need to bring in something like this w. shooters must have chalked ir plans in run-up to Olympics." During trap finals of Shotgun Nationals last week, Raninder h said, "Everyone is going to train in Delhi. one is going to train in Japan or Switzerland or Italy. If you want to go to ammunition testing or changing your grip or barrel n yes, we will send you outside. But I want to monitor ir progress and keep track of ir performance."
