There are good times ahead for India as far as tennis is concerned. After Sumit Nagal recently gave Swiss ace Roger Federer a run for his money at the US Open 2019, Indian tennis star Divij Sharan has also reaped rewards for his consistently good outings. The recent tennis rankings have seen Sharan jump three places to 42, becoming not only India’s No 1 but also Asia’s top doubles player in the latest ATP doubles tennis rankings. The players ranked above him are predominantly from Europe and the US, with a few from Argentina and Brazil.
Divij Sharan: Asia's top-ranked doubles tennis player
Sharan paired with fellow Indian ace Rohan Bopanna keeping an eye on the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which started off on positive with a win at the Tata Open. However, after a run of poor performances, the duo split as their ranking did not allow them to compete in major competitions.
Sharan has had as many as 10 partners in 28 tours this year, with him finding relative success with Brazilian compatriot Marcelo Demoliner and Slovakia’s Igor Zelenay. Sharan reached the final of the BMW Munich Open with Demoliner, while he won the St. Petersburg Open with Igor. The challenge for Sharan now would be to build on his form and make it count.
The experienced tennis player, who is a beneficiary of the government’s TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) and an employee of the Indian Oil, plans on playing the Tokyo Olympics with Rohan Bopanna (current rank-44). The Indian duo would like to repeat their success of the Tata Open Maharashtra in Pune this year. The Delhi lad hopes to build on his recent success and hopes to surpass his career-best rank World No 36 and add to the five doubles titles in the near future with his consistent performances.
