Two-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka has parted ways with her coach Jermaine Jenkins within a span of 7 months after her defeat in the 4th round of the US Open. Osaka hired Jenkins after she won the Australian Open. Jermaine Jenkins has also been the on-court practice partner with seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. Naomi Osaka has not reached a tournament final since she partnered up with Jenkins after abruptly ending her association with Sascha Bajin. Osaka posted a tweet that said she was grateful for the time invested and the things she learned on and off-court. She further added that it was the right time for her to embark on a new path.
Injury-plagued season
The former world number 1 tennis player was troubled by a knee problem throughout the tournament before being ousted by Belinda Bencic in straight sets in the fourth round. The fourth round defeat was preceded by a disappointing season after early exits from the French Open and Wimbledon. Asia's first top-ranked player was the first player since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 to claim back to back first two Grand Slam titles. Osaka was of the opinion that the world number 1 ranking carries a heavy weight along with the expectations of remaining consistent. Osaka claimed the top spot in the build-up to the last grand slam of the 2019 season irrespective of her not so impressive response in the previous WTA sanctioned tournaments.
A drop down the ladder
Naomi's early defeat in the US Open has seen her drop in the rankings, bringing her to the fourth position now with Ashleigh Barty claiming the top spot, Karolina Pliskova at the second rank and Elina Svitolina at the third rank in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Rankings.
