China announces $2 billion to support COVID-19 response efforts
China’s President Xi Jinping said that the country will provide $2 billion over two years to fight the coronavirus pandemic and the economic fallout from it.

While United States slashed funding for World Health Organisation (WHO), China’s President Xi Jinping on May 18 said that country will provide $2 billion over two years to fight coronavirus pandemic and ecomic fallout from it. Xi reportedly said that two billion is in a bid to support COVID-9 response efforts, particularly in developing countries.
Meanwhile, European Union’s 27-member bloc and or countries called for an independent evaluation of WHO’s initial response to coronavirus pandemic to review experience gained and lessons learned. However, Xi reportedly said that China h provided all relevant outbreak data to WHO and or countries, including virus’ genetic sequence. Xi also said that nation has shared control and treatment experience with world without reservation and y have also done everything in ir power to support and assist countries in need.

As per reports, EU resolution, on or hand, proposes that independent evaluation should be initiated ‘at earliest appropriate moment’. Furr, resolution also states that evaluation should examine actions of WHO and ir timelines pertaining to COVID-19 pandemic.

‘WHO sounded alarm early’
While US President has repeatedly attacked WHO and said that it helped China conceal extent of coronavirus pandemic in its early sts, WHO chief Tedros ham Ghebreyesus, at 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) said that organisation anunced outbreak to be a global health emergency on January 30.

Tedros also ded that in following weeks he even warned countries that re was a narrowing window of opportunity to prevent virus from spreing globally. Furr ding, Tedros said that WHO was committed to "transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement" and welcomed proposal for an independent evaluation of global response to COVID-19.
While dressing 73rd WHA, Tedros said, “Since day one, WHO has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with countries in se darkest hours. WHO sounded alarm early, and we sounded it often”.

Tedros also ted that organisation also provided technical guidance and strategic vice, based on latest science and experience. He furr ded that WHO “supported countries to apt and implement guidance”.
