Facebook might cease to offer its services, including Instagram from Europe if Irish Data Protection Commission imposes a ban on sharing data with US, Yvonne Cunnane, He of Data Protection and Associate General Counsel at Facebook Ireland said in a court filing obtained by ANI. Facebook, which has been accused of stealing personal data, was jolted by European Court of Justice earlier when latter invalidated 2016 Privacy shield, which protects fundamental rights of anyone in EU whose personal data is transferred to United States for commercial purposes. Citing reason behind refusal, court claimed that EU digital privacy laws were at risk of being violated under agreement as it allowed for data to be transferred, stored, and processed in United States.
'Facebook depends on data sharing'
However, Facebook objected to it stating that agreement was t a threat but a proof that organisation’s functions were based upon data transfers between US and EU. In case, data transfer was banned, it would t only dam company but also hamper organisation’s growth. In such circumstances, Facebook, which is highly data-driven would cease to operate in EU, organisation stated.

"In event that [Facebook] was subject to a complete prohibition on transfer of user data to United States, as appears to be what DPC [Data Protection Commissioner] proposes, it is t clear to [Facebook] how, in such circumstances, it could continue to provide inter alia Facebook and Instagram services in EU," ANI cited a document that was unveiled earlier this week.
