Quad foreign ministers will meet tomorrow, what exactly is the Quad?
Foreign ministers of Quad are going to meet tommorow morning. We all keep hearing about Quad quite a lot these day. So, what exactly is it?
Quad is a strategic partnership between four democratic nations - India, United States, Japan, and Australia - aimed at promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The Quad was founded in 2007 when the four nations held their first informal talks on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Manila, Philippines. However, the initiative was short-lived, and the Quad was disbanded after only one meeting.
It wasn't until 2017 that the Quad was revived, and the four nations held their second meeting in Manila, where they discussed ways to enhance cooperation and promote regional stability. Since then, the Quad has held several ministerial-level meetings, and in 2021, the leaders of the four countries held their first summit.
The Quad's relevance lies in the shared strategic interests of its member countries. The four nations are all committed to promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region, where countries are free to pursue their interests without fear of coercion or intimidation. The Quad's primary focus is on promoting cooperation in areas such as maritime security, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
One of the Quad's most significant achievements has been the coordination of joint military exercises and naval patrols in the Indo-Pacific region. These activities have helped to promote regional stability and deter aggression from non-state actors and hostile nations.
The Quad has also been instrumental in promoting global health security, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The four nations have worked together to develop and distribute vaccines and medical supplies to countries in need, including those in the Indo-Pacific region.

G20 was created in response to the Asian financial crisis, what exactly was the Asian financial crisis?
The G20, or Group of 20 to be more precise, was created in response to the Asian financial crisis. So, what exactly was this crisis?
The Asian financial crisis was a period of economic upheaval that began in July 1997 and affected many countries in Asia, including Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The crisis was triggered by a combination of factors, including a sharp decline in currency values, large capital outflows, and high levels of foreign debt.
One of the primary causes of the crisis was the rapid growth of these economies in the years preceding the crisis. Many of these countries had experienced significant economic growth, fueled in part by large inflows of foreign capital. However, as their economies became increasingly integrated into the global financial system, they became more vulnerable to external shocks, such as changes in global interest rates or shifts in investor sentiment.
In Thailand, the crisis was triggered by the devaluation of the Thai baht in July 1997. The baht had been pegged to the U.S. dollar, but as the Thai economy began to slow down and foreign investors began to withdraw their capital, the government was unable to maintain the peg. This led to a sharp decline in the value of the baht, which in turn led to a wave of bankruptcies and defaults among Thai businesses.
The crisis quickly spread to other countries in the region, as investors became increasingly wary of the risks associated with investing in emerging markets. In South Korea, the crisis was exacerbated by the country's large corporate debt burden, which had been built up during the years of rapid economic growth. As investors began to flee the country, the government was forced to implement a series of emergency measures to prop up the financial system, including the use of foreign reserves and the sale of national assets.
In Indonesia, the crisis was compounded by political instability and corruption, which made it difficult for the government to implement effective economic policies. The government was eventually forced to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which provided a bailout package in exchange for a series of economic reforms.
The Asian financial crisis had a profound impact on the region, causing widespread unemployment, bankruptcies, and social unrest. In the years following the crisis, many of the affected countries implemented significant reforms to their financial systems, including increased transparency, improved regulation, and greater oversight of the banking sector. The crisis also led to a shift in global economic power, as investors became more cautious about investing in emerging markets and began to focus on more stable and established economies.

Blinken asked Lavrov to reverse the suspension of New START treaty, so, what is the New START treaty?
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in his short interaction with Lavrov, which lasted less than 10 minutes, urged Moscow to reverse the suspension of the New START treaty. So, what exactly is this treaty?
The New START treaty is a bilateral arms control agreement between the United States and Russia, aimed at reducing and limiting the number of deployed nuclear warheads and delivery systems. The treaty was signed on April 8, 2010, and entered into force on February 5, 2011.
The history of the New START treaty can be traced back to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which was signed by the United States and the Soviet Union in 1991. START was the first major arms control agreement between the two countries and led to significant reductions in their respective nuclear arsenals.
However, the original START treaty expired in 2009, and negotiations began between the United States and Russia to create a new arms control agreement to replace it. These negotiations were complicated by a number of factors, including disagreements over missile defense, concerns over Russian compliance with existing arms control agreements, and a deteriorating relationship between the two countries.
Despite these challenges, negotiators from the United States and Russia eventually reached an agreement on the New START treaty in 2010. The treaty limits the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550, and the number of deployed delivery systems to 700. It also includes a verification regime that allows each country to monitor the other's compliance with the treaty.
The New START treaty was widely seen as an important achievement in arms control and was praised by many international leaders and experts. However, the treaty has also been the subject of controversy and criticism, particularly in the United States, where some have argued that the treaty does not go far enough in reducing nuclear weapons and that Russia has not fully complied with its obligations under the agreement. All those complaints are now moot as Russia has suspended the treaty, elevating the risk of nuclear conflict.

Roots and purpose of G20
The G20 (Group of Twenty) is a forum for international economic cooperation that brings together the leaders of the world's largest economies, as well as the European Union. The G20 was created in 1999 in response to the Asian financial crisis, and its original purpose was to bring together finance ministers and central bank governors to discuss international financial stability and cooperation.
Over time, the G20's mandate has expanded to cover a broader range of economic issues, including trade, development, and energy. The G20 has also become a key forum for addressing global challenges such as climate change and pandemics.
The G20's membership includes 19 countries and the European Union, representing approximately 80% of the world's GDP and two-thirds of the world's population. The 19 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The G20 operates through a series of meetings and working groups. The G20 leaders meet annually at a summit to discuss the most pressing economic issues facing the world. In addition, there are regular meetings of finance ministers and central bank governors, as well as working groups on specific topics such as trade, energy, and development.
The G20 has had a significant impact on global economic governance since its creation. One of its most notable achievements was its response to the 2008 financial crisis, when G20 leaders agreed to a coordinated stimulus package that helped to prevent a global depression. The G20 has also been instrumental in promoting international trade and investment, and in advancing the global agenda on climate change.

Have heard cries for reforms since 2005, they have not materialised till date: EAM Jaishankar
Current global architecture is in its 8th decade. The number of members of the UN has quadrupled in this period. It neither reflects today's politics, economics, demographics or aspirations. Since 2005, we have heard sentiments for reform being expressed at the highest level, stated EAM Jaishankar.
But as we all know, these have not materialised. The reasons are no secret either. The longer we put it off, the more the credibility of multilateralism stands eroded. Global decisionmaking must be democratised if it has to have a future.
