G4 nations aver UNSC 'failed' to address global conflicts; seek urgent reform in UN bodies

The Foreign Ministers of the G4 countries agreed that the Security Council is not able to address the issues "effectively" and urged the UNSC to bring reforms.

Amid increasing conflicts across globe, foreign ministers of G4 countries -- Brazil, Germany, India and Japan -- agreed that Security Council is t able to address issues "effectively". leaders urged UN Security Council to bring an urgent reform in order to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities in a better way. During meeting, G4 nations also said if UNSC take up conflict issues, it would enhance effectiveness, legitimacy and implementation of its decisions. critical remarks came as G4 ministers-- Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Alberto Franco Franca, EAM S Jaishankar, Germany's Annalena Baerbock and Japan's Yoshimasa Hayashi -- underscored that conflicts around globe t only increase complexity in system but also affect or interconnected global challenges.

G4 Ministers stress on expansion of Security Council

Reviewing work of 76th Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), G4 Ministers expressed concern at continued lack of meaningful progress in Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform. Furr, y agreed that in order to produce concrete outcomes, IGN must be guided by decision-making requirements and working methods laid out in Charter of United Nations and in rules and procedures of General Assembly. Ministers expressed disappointment at concerted attempts to stall process, and renewed ir commitment to addressing issue in a decisive manner and with increased urgency in 77th Session of UNGA.

G4 Ministers welcomed clear recommendation of President of 76th General Assembly to "gradually move process towards text-based negotiations”, and expressed hope that this guidance would be followed by all delegations in 77th General Assembly Session. G4 Ministers reiterated that expansion of Security Council in both permanent and n-permanent categories of membership is essential to make body more representative, legitimate and effective. Ministers agreed on need for enhanced role and presence of developing countries and of major contributors to United Nations to enhance capacity of Council to respond effectively to complex and evolving challenges world faces today on questions of international peace and security.
