German Foreign Minister assures of sanctions if Russia gets implicated in Navalny case

German health authorities had confirmed the poisoning of Navalny with a nerve agent from the Novichok group, citing toxicological test results.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas reportedly said that re is way around sanctions against Russia if involvement of Kremlin behind poisoning of Russian opposition leer Alexei Navalny gets established. In an interview to German news portal t-online, Maas was asked about Germany’s benign response to suspected poisoning of Navalny with chemical nt vichok even after German, French and Swedish laboratories confirmed it.

"Germany has referred case to distinguished International Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons [OPCW] for investigation. If results of German, Swedish, and French laboratories are confirmed, re will be a clear response from EU. I am sure of that," Maas said.

During interview, Maas was asked what measures would Germany take if Russian authorities get implicated in poison attack.

"We as EU member states will decide that toger. I am convinced that re will be way around sanctions," he said.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron h demanded a swift explanation from Russia on “attempted assassination” of Navalny using a nerve nt. Speaking at annual garing of UN General Assembly, Macron warned Moscow of consequences if it fails to provide “swift and flawless” explanation on poison attack.

“We will t tolerate use of chemical weapons in Europe, Russia or Syria,” French President told UNGA meet, urging Russia to shed “full light” on incident.  

Russia dismissed allegations

Kremlin has dismissed allegations and accused Navalny of working with Central Intelligence ncy (CIA), a foreign intelligence service of US, soon after Navalny held Putin responsible for suspected poisoning. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “specialists” of CIA are working with Navalny as Russian leer continues with his recovery process in Germany.
