Maas: Erdogan insults of Macron 'a new low point'

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas described the Turkish president's recent comments on the French president as "a new low point", adding that they "are completely unacceptable".

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said President Emmanuel Macron needed mental health treatment and made other comments that the French government described as unacceptably rude.

Erdogan questioned his French counterpart's mental condition while criticising Macron's attitude toward Islam and Muslims.

Maas stressed Germany's solidarity with France in the fight against Islamic extremists.

France recalled its ambassador to Turkey for consultations after Erdogan's comment about Macron.

Maas said Germany has "great understanding" for the diplomatic measures taken by France.

The president of Turkey took a second insulting swipe at French President Emmanuel Macron for condoning caricatures of the prophet of Islam in a growing, potentially high-risk dispute.

A day after saying that Macron needed his head examined, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that the French leader has "lost his way."

French authorities denounced Turkish "propaganda" against France that they said was aimed at fanning hate at home and abroad, and asked Sunday that calls to boycott French products cease immediately.
