bel Prize in Chemistry 2020 has been awarded jointly to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna "for development of a method for geme editing." Royal Swedish Acemy of Sciences said in a statement that Chemistry Laureates Charpentier and Doudna discovered one of gene techlogy’s sharpest tools - CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors.
“Using se, researchers can change DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision,” Acemy ded.
It stated that CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors have revolutionised molecular life sciences, brought new opportunities for plant breeding, are contributing to invative cancer rapies and may make “dream of curing inherited diseases come true.” Claes Gustafsson, chair of bel Committee for Chemistry, said in a statement that genetic tool t only revolutionised basic science but also resulted in invative crops and will le to ground-breaking new medical treatments,

Breakthrough in geme editing techlogy
Charpentier published her discovery in 2011 and, later in year, initiated a collaboration with Doudna. y succeeded in recreating bacteria’s genetic scissors in a test tube and simplifying scissors’ molecular components so y were easier to use. duo n reprogrammed genetic scissors.
Royal Swedish Acemy of Sciences furr stated that this tool has contributed to many important discoveries in basic research, and plant researchers have been able to develop crops that withstand mould, pests and drought. ded that se genetic scissors have taken life sciences into a “new epoch and, in many ways, are bringing greatest benefit to humankind.”
