Pro-Hong Kong democracy activists in Taipei on Thursday voiced their strong disagreement against a Hong Kong court who is appealing the media tycoon Jimmy Lai's release on bail. Lai had appeared in court on the same day as prosecutors asked the city's top judges to send him back to detention after he was granted bail last week on fraud and national security-related charges.

If the prosecutors succeed, Lai will be detained until his next court appearance on April 16. Sang Pu, a Hong Kong lawyer who lives in Taiwan and President for Taiwan Hong-Kong Association believed that Lai was not guilty and that "the charge of collusion with foreign forces he is said to be guilty of is beyond comprehension."

Prior to being granted bail, Lai had been held in custody for nearly three weeks. He is among a string of pro-democracy activists and supporters arrested by Hong Kong police in recent months as authorities step up their crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. The Taiwanese activists also protested against China for apprehending 12 young Hong Kongers as they were attempting to reach Taiwan by sea.
