Turkey's Aegean province of Izmir hit by flooding

One person has died and one is missing in flash floods that have struck Turkey's Aegean province of Izmir, according to the country's state-run news agency.

One person has died and one is missing in flash floods that have struck Turkey's Aegean province of Izmir, according to the country's state-run news agency.

The two people were trapped inside a vehicle that was carried away by rising water in the town of Menderes, Anadolu Agency reported.

Anadolu quoted Izmir's Governor Yavuz Selim Kosger as saying  the region received 1.5 times more rain than the average total for all of February in just 10 hours.

Many residences and businesses in Bayrakli and Karabağlar were severely damaged by the floods which also left vehicles stranded on highways.

Anadolu says there has been 142kg of rainfall per square metre over the past 14 hours in the region and the downpour is forecast to continue until tomorrow morning.
