French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro engaged in a war of words on Monday after the latter endorsed a social media post about the former's wife Brigitte Macron. In an irate response to the Brazilian President's actions, Macron said that Bolsonaro’s comment on the post, in which Brigitte Macron was compared to Bolsonaro’s wife, was “extraordinarily disrespectful" to his wife. Macron added he hoped the Brazilian people would soon have a president worthy of them.
Earlier, the Brazilian President commented on a post which compared his wife to French President Macron's wife. On the post, a social media user posted a comment saying, "Do you understand now why Macron persecutes Bolsonaro?" Responding to the comment, the Brazilian President commented, "Don’t humiliate the guy. Ha ha". The two world leaders have been engaged in a war of words recently over Amazon wildfires, with Macron blaming Bolsonaro for the incident and accusing him of lying about his climate change policy.

"(Bolsanaro) has made some extraordinarily rude comments about my wife. What can I say? It’s sad for him, firstly, and for Brazilians...I think Brazilian women will probably be ashamed to read that from their President. As I feel friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will very soon have a president who behaves in the right way," Macron said in the matter.

War of words between Macron and Bolsonaro
This incident has come days after a feud broke between the two leaders with Emmanuel Macron accusing his Brazilian counterpart of lying about his commitment to fighting climate change, and Bolsonaro accusing Macron of having a “colonialist mind-set” telling him to stay out of Brazilian business. French President has been making efforts to put international pressure on Brazil to take action on the fire raging in the Amazon.
