Russia has sent a special regiment of its Aerospace Forces to defend the Kursk region due to a manpower shortage caused by Ukraine's ongoing offensive, according to the independent investigative outlet Important Stories.

The deployment follows a cross-border raid by Ukrainian forces on August 6, which caught Russian authorities by surprise. The "space troops," a unit created between May and June, are now tasked with repelling Ukrainian advances in Kursk.

Ukrainian forces have made significant gains

Ukrainian forces have made significant gains, capturing 1,150 square kilometers (444 square miles) of Russian territory and 82 settlements in the Kursk region, as reported by Oleksandr Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on August 15. This rapid expansion has resulted in Ukraine seizing more territory in Kursk in just a few days than Russia has captured in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's troops show no signs of slowing down.

Why is Ukraine's incursion significant?

This situation marks the first time foreign troops have seized Russian territory since World War II. The deployment of Russia’s Aerospace Forces, which includes personnel from security and logistics companies, engineers, mechanics, and radar station staff from Voronezh, highlights the severity of the situation. The unit also includes personnel from a Russian spaceport and special warehouses responsible for manning Russia's nuclear deterrent.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that this incursion into Kursk is forcing Russia to redeploy troops from other front lines in Ukraine. The think tank predicts that future phases of fighting within Russia will demand even more Russian manpower and resources.
