UN defeats Russia's resolution demanding equal participation of women at peace tables

United Nations Security Council on October 30 defeated a Russian resolution to hour 20th anniversary of a UN measure demanding equal participation for women in activities that promote global peace. According to reports by AP, draft by Russia was supported by Russia, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa. countries which were t in favour of measure were United States, United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Dominican Republic, Germany, Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and Grenines, and Tunisia. vote stood at 5-0.

Countries who abstained from draft said that it weakens existing UN resolution opted in 2000 and 9 follow-up resolutions. Christoph Heusgen, Germany’s US ambassor said that his calls for strong langu on human rights foundation of all resolutions, and for “ equate reflection of critical role of civil society, women peacebuilders and human rights defenders” in implementing measures were t reflected in Russian draft. US amabassor Kelly Craft said, " draft resolution “was designed to undermine and reverse progress of past 20 years,” and “it is evident that our Russian and Chinese colleagues ... do t believe women should be fully empowered to prevent conflict, or sit at table to pursue peace and reconciliation".

resolution which was presented would have houred 20th anniversary of initial women, peace and security resolution. UN Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuk said that women continue to remain “systematically excluded” from talks to end conflicts and men continue to take most important decisions. She furr said that negotiations elevated and empowered “ actors that have fueled violence,” inste of empowering women and ors who are peace-builders — and women were eir confined to “informal processes or relegated to role of spectators”.

According to Britain, draft proposed lacked “sufficient langu on implementation”, said UN ambassor Jonathan Allen. Allen said, “ option of this text would have undermined significant achievements me on this critical nda and enduring efforts of so many women’s rights activists”. Countries who abstained from draft were accused by China of t being open to “new perspective and elements” and also for “clinging only to existing langu and refusing improvement”.
