UN: Indian Army veteran Abhijit Guha to lead misson to Hodeidah, Yemen

The United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres on September 12 appointed an Indian Lieutenant General (Retired) Abhijit Guha as the head of the UN mission in Hodeidah, Yemen. General Guha brings to the mission his 39 years of National and International military experience.

General Guha will also be in another role

Apart from leading the UN Mission in support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHAmen) Army Veteran Abhijit Guha shall also assume the position of chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC), tasked with redeployment of forces of the warring factions of Yemen in line with their agreement. A statement from UN Chief's office said, "Guha will succeed Danish Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgard, who served in these positions from January 31 to July 31, 2019."

General Guha's experience 

To the position, General brings 39 years of national and international military experience. He had earlier served as Deputy Military Adviser and Military Adviser from 2009-2013 in the Office of Military Affairs of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, while also establishing in 2013 the Office of Peacekeeping and Strategic Partnerships in 2013. Earlier he has held a number of important commands, staff and instructional appointments in the Indian Army including leadership of an Infantry Brigade and Infantry Division, and of the Mumbai Area. He also served as a Military Observer as part of United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia in the '90s.

After the retirement from the Indian Army in 2013, General Guha had served on an Expert Panel on Technology and Innovation in UN Peacekeeping (2014) and the High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations in 2015. He has led a plethora of United Nation's investigations and boards of inquiry in Africa and the Gulf. The General is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the College of Combat and the National Defence College all of which were in India. Guha is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the College of Combat, and the National Defence College, each in India.
