US sanctions two Chinese nationals over 2018 North Korean cyberattack
The authorities of the US have sanctioned and two Chinese nationals on March 2 and accused them of laundering more than $100 million in cryptocurrency.

United States authorities have sanctioned two Chinese nationals on March 2 and accused m of laundering more than $100 million in cryptocurrency which was stolen in cyberattack linked to rth Korea in 2018. US Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in official statement that it designated Tian Yinyin and Li Jiong for having “materially assisted” cyber intrusion linked to "Lazarus" Group, which is a US-designated rth Korean state-sponsored malicious cyber group.
According to official website, US Treasury Secretary Steven T Mnuchin“ rth Korean regime has continued its widespre campaign of extensive cyber-attacks on financial institutions to steal funds. United States will continue to protect global financial system by holding accountable those who help rth Korea eng in cyber-crime.”

Accused of stealing $91 million
US Treasury Department has stated that both Tian and Li received approximately $91 million from rth Korean controlled accounts that were stolen in an April 2018 hack of a cryptocurrency exchange as well as an ditional $9.5 million from a hack of ar exchange. According to official website, Democratic People's Republic of Korea “trains cyber actors to target and launder stolen funds from financial institutions”. Moreover, both Chinese nationals transferred money among dresses y h held resulting in obfuscation of origin of funds.

As a result of US OFAC's action, all property and interests of Tian and Li that are in United States or in possession or control of American people will be blocked and reported to officials. authorities have furr prohibited two Chinese nationals from all deals by US persons or within America that involve any property or interests in property of blocked persons.

According to official website, “rth Korea’s malicious cyber activity is a key revenue generator for regime, from ft of fiat currency at conventional financial institutions to cyber intrusions targeting cryptocurrency exchanges.”
