BRICS members condemn terrorism, stress adoption of CCIT unanimously

The Foreign Ministers of BRICS stressed the need for early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) to combat terror

Foreign Ministers of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations, on Thursday, during ir annual meeting on margins of 74th session of UN General Assembly, laid stress on need for early option of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) 

Strong retaliation towards terrorism

Ministers expressed ir strong retaliation towards all kinds of terrorism, whenever and by whomsoever committed. As per joint statement released following meeting, it was reported that members expressed ir conviction that a comprehensive approach is necessary to ensure an effective fight against terrorism.

statement furr mentioned importance of finding ways to combat terrorism in accordance with international law under UN auspices and stressed in this regard need for early option of a CCIT. While recalling 2005 World Summit Outcome Document, Foreign Ministers also talked about need for a comprehensive reform of UN, including its Security Council. joint opinion came on grounds with a view to making it more representative, effective and efficient, and to increase representation of developing countries so that it can equately respond to global challenges.

 "China and Russia reiterated importance y attach to status and role of Brazil, India and South Africa in international affairs and support ir aspiration to play a greater role in UN," statement ded. BRICS leers also welcomed special focus of high-level segment of UNGA on sustainable development and holding of Climate and SDG Summits and high-level events on Health and Financing for Development. Ministers reaffirmed ir commitment to 2030 nda for Sustainable Development and called for redoubled efforts for its timely implementation.

Need for effective international action stressed upon

Ar thing that was stressed upon is need for more effective international action on climate change and reaffirmed ir commitment towards full implementation of Paris Agreement. statement also said: " leers urged developed countries to support developing countries, including through houring ir financial commitments and transfer of techlogy, which are most critical enablers for climate action,"

 " Ministers furr reiterated ir commitment to transparent, n-discriminatory, open, free and inclusive international tre and ted that protectionism and unilateralism run counter to rules and spirit of WTO," statement furr highlighted. Expressing ir concern about current world situation and in an effort to find peaceful solutions, Foreign Ministers expressed ir concern over continued conflicts in several regions around globe, which undermine international security and stability. y also went on to commend African Union for its efforts aimed at resolving and managing conflicts on continent and welcomed strengning of cooperation between United Nations Security Council and African Union Peace and Security Council. 

"y furr commended African Union's commitment to "Silencing Guns by 2020" and reiterated support for efforts to strengn African Peace and Security Architecture," statement ded. 11th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in Brasilia in vember 2019. A stand-alone meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations is also supposed to be held in Russia next year.
