US President Donald Trump said he has "learned a lot" from his diagnosis with COVID-19, adding: "I get it."
“I learned it by really going to school,” he said, standing in his hospital room in a video posted on social media.
“This is the real school, this isn’t the ‘let’s read the books’ school. And I get it and I understand it. And it’s a very interesting thing.”
He also used the video to tease a surprise trip to greet cheering supporters gathered outside the hospital.
He drove by the crowd, waving, with several other people in an armoured SUV, in a move one of the doctors at the hospital called "insanity."
Dr. James P. Phillips, an attending physician at Walter Reed, tweeted: "Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary presidential 'drive-by' just now has to be quarantined for 14 days. They might get sick. They may die. For political theatre."
Trump also said in his message that he had met "some of soldiers and the first responders" at the hospital, raising questions about his contacts while convalescing.
