On September 23, Former Vice- President Joe Biden, who is running against Donald Trump in the upcoming 2020 general elections, has asked for an investigation concerning reports that President Donald Trump pressurized the Ukrainian President to investigate Biden and his son. During his campaign in Iowa, Biden seemed agitated at the reports and stated to international media that “this appears to be overwhelming abuse of power”. He further added,

“To get on the phone with a foreign leader who is looking for help from the United States and ask about me and imply things … this is outrageous,”.

Biden against Trump

Joe Biden in his campaign claimed that Trump is using such means because he is well aware that “I will beat him like a drum and is using the abuse of power and every element of the presidency to try to do something to smear me,” Trump's telephonic conversation with Ukraine’s President on July 25 is at the centre of an escalating fight over an informant's complaint apparently concerning the US President’s dealing with Ukraine that the administration has declined to give Congress. The international media, however, reported that Trump repeatedly asked the Ukraine President to call an investigation against Biden.

The investigation

The investigation was regarding unconfirmed charges that while Biden held the position of Vice President, he threatened to withhold US aid unless the prosecutor examining the case of the gas company in which Biden’s son was involved was fired. Biden, on the other hand, agreed to withhold the US power unless the prosecution lawyer was fired. A similar demand was made by the US government, the European Union and other international institutions for his alleged inability to pursue corruption cases.

Escalating political battle

The media reports about the phone call have escalated requests by Democratic legislators for the House of Representatives to dispatch arraignment procedures against Trump, and have raised the discussion to a major campaign issue. Donald Trump has dismissed any claims of wrongdoing. In a series of tweets posted on Twitter, he said that conversation with Zelenskiy was normal and routine. He accused the Fake news media and their accomplice, Democratic Party of staying away from Biden’s allegations.
