Regardless of the reasons, there’s a common belief that sleeping on the floor can alleviate back pain. But how accurate is this idea? According to Medical News Today, although research on this topic is limited, some individuals who have adopted this habit report relief from back pain.

Can Sleeping On The Floor Help With Back Pain?

The publication notes that research suggests “using a medium-firm mattress promotes sleep comfort, enhances sleep quality, and improves spinal alignment,” all of which can help reduce back pain, as supported by a 2015 systematic review.

However, Medical News Today also points out that firm support could potentially mimic these benefits of a mattress. Yet, “without sufficient cushioning around pressure points on the body — such as the hips, tailbone, shoulder blades, or back of the head — sleeping on the floor could increase pressure and discomfort. This could result in poor sleep as well as further pain."
